First Lax Game of the Season Tomorrow

Tomorrow marks the start of our 2010 SMS lacrosse season. Are team has some great skill but consists of many guys who are very new to the game. We are starting the season against Mt. Anthony, a young team that we beat last year by a score of 12-2. Next week we head to Vermont academy for our most challenging game of the season, their team is talented and has much more depth than ours. We have lost to them the two past year but both games have been close.

Our season will be very short this year, less than 2 months long (including practices). The first practice we had was this tuesday, giving us a total of three practices before our first game. With this set back and our lack of experience, it is very impressive how competitive our team is. Another problem we have encountered is a lack of players. We will be lucky to have more than 1 sub for tomorrows game. In a game such as lacrosse this makes it very difficult on the players. Fatigue may become an issue in our more competitive battles even with a team in very good shape. All in all this season won’t be easy but I’m sure it will be a blast.

NHL Winter Classic

The NHL Winter Classic played in Fenway Park, in Boston, was one of the greatest NHL games of all time. The venue was incredible, the rink stretching across the infield in the center of a packed stadium.

Throughout the hard fought game between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers the energy was incredible. Although trailing 1-0 throughout the majority of the game the Bruins were able to tie it late in the third period. Heading into overtime the Bruins had clear momentum. Tim Thomas was outstanding between the posts blocking an array of shot early in OT. The Bruins were able to counter attack after a miraculous save by Thomas. Marco Sturm was able to capitalize and put a beautiful glove-side shot past the Flyer goaltender to end the game.

Fenway park exploded into cheer as if it was a walk off home run in October. The game was a historical event for Boston sports and was viewed as one of the greatest games of all time by those who attended.

I made this with the thought of making an add that could be used for the FIS World Cup. Bode Miller is the most popular ski racer in the world so I chose to use his photos.

Update on Moscow Race

The race turned out to be a great success with an estimated 25-30,000 people in attendance. The 66m high ramp offered quite a spectacl as the worlds best races took it on. Sweden’s Therese Borssen and Austrian Marcel Hirscher claimed the victories on the course in the single-pole knock-out slalom. The warm and rainy weather posed a significant challenge to the organizers who worked 24 hours a day for several days in the build up.

Atle Skaardal, FIS Race Director for the ladies’ FIS World Cup added: “Today’s event delivered great entertainment in a good atmosphere. The even larger ramp made it necessary to ski well to win the race. The ladies’ event debut presented impressive skiing, and in addition, everyone seemed to be having a great time. Everyone was very positive and I’m sure the teams would be glad to return next year.” (fis-ski.com)

Uproar in Ireland

The nation of Ireland began quite an uproar of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying match against the French. France won the game in stoppage time on a play started with a clear handball by Thierry Henry. The loss eliminated Ireland’s chances of competing in South Africa next summer. Henry was the first person to apologize for the handball and showed clear remorse for his actions.
This crisis has also drawn the attention of these two nation’s governments. The French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, felt obliged to tell the Irish Prime Minister, Brian Cowen, that he felt sorry for his people. Many French citizens feel that the legitimacy of their qualification has been ruined. Henry has been verbally attacked by many soccer icons for his actions.
Although the Irish Football Administration applied for a review of the play, FIFA turned down their request claiming the ruling on the field by the referee is official at the conclusion of the game.

FIS Ski Racing Goes to Moscow

International Ski Federation (FIS) officials have given the go ahead for preparation to continue at the site of the Audi FIS Alpine Ski Champions Cup parallel slalom race scheduled to be held in downtown Moscow, Russia on November 21. The even will be held on a 2500 ton steel ramp, and covered with 5000 cubic meters of man-made snow.

This is the second annual Moscow race. These races have been organized in order to excite the russian people for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. The race includes the top slalom skiers on the world cup, 15 men and 7 women. Three Russian mean and one woman will also be given the opportunity to participate in the race.

Last year the american men had an impressive performance with Bode Miller placing third, and Ted Ligety in fourth. Neither men returned this year as they are both currently training in Vail for their next World Cup starts in Lake Louis, Canada.

The slalom in Russia has a very different format that allows much more excitement for spectators. “Racers will face off in a parallel format with the top racer (according to current World Cup standings) racing the lowest ranked athlete in the first round. Each pair will race two runs, trading courses for the second run. Based on the first run, a time penalty will be added to the losing racer’s second run, enforced by the delayed opening of the start gate. The first racer to cross the finish line on the second run is the winner of that round and moves on to the next heat.” (Ski Racing Magazine)
